American Eagle Gold Coins are world famous gold coins minted in the USA. All of the gold that makes up the coins is decreed by law to come from American sources only. The American eagle was introduced in 1986, during a period when South African gold was banned from import to protest apartheid, and in a flash it became very popular because the restrictions on South African imports had meant that demand was not being adequately met.
American Eagle Coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz denominations, and contain 91.67% pure gold, in other words 22 carat gold. The denomination of the coin represent the coin's gold conent, and other metals are not counted towards this total. Differing from South African Krugerands which are made of gold with copper, American Eagles contain a copper and silver alloy, giving them a lighter, yellower tone that the deep orange of Kruggerands. One side of the coin features an image of Lady Liberty with a torch in her hand. The opposite side features the picture of a male eagle above a female eagle with baby eagles. The male eagle has the meaning of the US's amazing strength and resolve to defend itself and its citizens, but the male's grasp there is an olive branch as well, indicating American's fight for peace while maintaining security and its power. The 4 denominations all have the same obverse and reverse designs, with the exception of the denomination that is written, and the coins' sizes are different of course.
American Eagle gold coins have a face value indicated on them. One ounce coinds have $50 printed on them, one half ounce coins have $25 written on them, one quarter ounce coins have $10 written on them, and one tenth ounce coins have $5 written on them. But the fact of the matter is that the face values are meaningless, except to indicate that the coin is officially legal tender.Their true value resembles the market value of their gold content, plus a certain premium. To be sure, an American Eagle coin with a face value of $50 is currently worth almost $1000!
